The problem
65% of households use firewood for cooking, a hugely harmful practice particularly affecting women.
Women spend four to six hours a day collecting or purchasing firewood, attending to fires and cooking.
Smoke inhalation and radiated heat are major contributors to poor health as well as frequent accidents and injuries.
Smelling of wood smoke is a stigma associated with poverty. Many residents expressed their shame about using firewood for cooking.
The solution
Give a stove and you give health and dignity
Providing a small gas stove to replace wood burning is transformational, particularly for women, in terms of health, education, livelihood and dignity.
